HCC OFFERING NINE LANGUAGE COURSES THIS SPRING

BRIDGEPORT – Housatonic Community College is offering nine non-credit foreign language courses starting Feb. 10.

The six-week Conversational Arabic course is an elementary course for those with little knowledge of the language. The emphasis will be on practical vocabulary, dialogue, basic grammar and culture.

The course, to be taught by Lutfieh Abou Ahasr, is appropriate for those engaged in foreign travel, the military, teaching, the health professions, counseling or business. The class will meet Saturdays, Feb. 10-Mar. 17, from 12 noon to 3 p.m.

The fee is $149, excluding texts.

HCC is the only community college to offer this course.

The six-week Chinese for Beginners course is designed for individuals interested in the Chinese language or planning to take a trip to China for business purposes or recreation. The course will cover greetings, pronunciation and writing techniques.

The class, to be taught by Zonghi Wu, will meet Wednesdays, Feb. 21-Mar. 28, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the C107 Conference Room. The fee is $99, excluding texts.

The four-week Conversational French 1 course will emphasize practical vocabulary, dialogue, basic grammar and culture. Those engaged in foreign travel for business or pleasure should find the course valuable.

The class, to be taught by Mona Mitri, will meet Sundays, Feb. 25-Mar. 18, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The fee is $99, excluding texts.

The four-week Conversational French 2 course is a continuation of language and conversational practice learned in the introductory course. This course will begin with intermediate level and gradually progress to advanced level French. Previous knowledge of the French language is required. The class, to be taught by Mona Mitri, will meet Sundays, April 15-May 6, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.The fee is $99, excluding texts.

The six-week Conversational German course is an elementary course designed for those with little knowledge of the language. The emphasis will be on practical vocabulary, dialogue, basic grammar and culture. Those engaged in foreign travel for business or recreation should find the course valuable.

The class, taught by Barbara Schmidt, will meet Tuesdays, Feb. 20-Mar. 27, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the C107 Conference Room. The fee is $99, excluding texts.

The six-week Kurdish for Beginners course is designed for those with little or no knowledge of the language. The course will cover the two basic Kurdish dialects: Kermanji or Bahdini, and Sorani. The class will focus on practical vocabulary, dialogue, basic grammar, and will touch on the history, culture, and geography of Kurdistan.

Those engaged in international travel for business, vacation, or military, should find this course helpful. The class, to be taught by Nidal Ali, will meet Fridays, Feb. 23-Mar. 30, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the C107 Conference Room. The fee is $99, excluding texts.

The six-week Conversational Polish course is designed for those with little or no knowledge of the Polish language. Emphasis will be on practical vocabulary, dialogue, basic grammar and the Polish culture.

The course is appropriate for people who travel internationally, conduct international business, interact with international population, or just wish to learn the Polish language.

The class, to be taught by Christopher Lubinski, will meet Tuesdays, Feb. 20-Mar. 27, from 7:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m., in the C107 Conference Room. The fee is $99, excluding texts.

The three-week Conversational Spanish Part 1 course is designed for those who need a basic working knowledge of Spanish for everyday use. Basic communication as well as culture and customs will be discussed and pronunciation and conversation will be emphasized.

The class, to be taught by Marta Laboy Acosta, will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, Mar. 5-Mar. 21, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in Room A101b. The fee is $99, excluding texts.

The three-week Conversational Spanish Part 2 course is a continuation of language and conversational practice learned in the introductory course. This course will begin with intermediate level and gradually progress to advanced level Spanish. Previous knowledge of the Spanish language required.

The class, to be taught by Marta Laboy Acosta, will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, Mar. 26-April 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in Room A101b. The fee is $99, excluding texts.

“These are fast-track, no-nonsense courses, designed to give you what you want, when you want it,” said Deborah S. Kuchmas, HCC Coordinator of Continuing Education. “These are only a few in a series of courses we offer for professional advancement or personal enjoyment.”
