Housatonic Community College Receives Grant from Sikorsky
Gift Supports College Industrial Technology Program

Barbara Johnson, President of the Housatonic Community College Foundation, Inc., has announced that Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation has contributed $10,000 to support HCC’s endeavors on behalf of the region’s industrial technology manufacturing.

The grant will provide for hiring a part-time Industrial Technology Program Coordinator at Housatonic. The coordinator’s focus will be on outreach to the manufacturing community and working with area high schools to find ways that will ease students’ transition to college.

The coordinator will also help create course curriculum that will train employees in key skilled areas in the manufacturing process. Employees trained in these specific skills are in high demand by local manufacturing companies.

Another aspect of the position will endeavor to increase student awareness of job opportunities in manufacturing throughout the region.

Paula Chapla, Sikorsky manager of Major Component Assembly, says, “This grant will help Housatonic on many levels. It will allow the College, through its coordinator, to focus on helping students to realize the potential for jobs in manufacturing technology. The coordinator will also ensure that high quality curriculum exists for their preparation into the workforce.”

It is expected that positions in metalworking, machinery manufacturing, and general purpose machinery manufacturing will increase significantly each year for the next several years.
