Housatonic Community College Foundation Receives Grant from People’s United Community Foundation

Gift Supports College Math and Language Labs

Barbara Johnson, president of the Housatonic Community College Foundation, Inc., has announced that People’s United Community Foundation has awarded a $150,000 grant to the Housatonic Community College Foundation, Inc. The gift is part of the Housatonic Foundation Pathways to Success Campaign, which has surpassed its goal of $1 million.

The gift will award $50,000 over three years to create and maintain Mathematics and Language Labs that will be located in Housatonic’s new building, Beacon Hall. The building is scheduled to be open for fall 2008 classes.

The funding addresses the need for math and language software programs for student development. The software will be available to students in classrooms, open computer labs and accessible to students from their homes. Tutorial support will also be provided. The self-paced lab experience allows students to individually progress through the course. It is expected that approximately 2,000 students yearly will benefit from these services.

Timothy Hodges, President of the People’s United Community Foundation, notes, “The People’s United Community Foundation has identified youth development as one of its major areas of focus. Young people are the future of our city and comprise the labor pool from which local companies will draw talent. An educated workforce bodes well not only for the business community but for the community at large, whose residents will not only work, but buy homes in and support Bridgeport’s redevelopment. We are grateful for the role Housatonic Community College plays in strengthening the fabric of our city.”

Barbara Johnson says, “We are delighted to receive this grant from People’s United Community Foundation. This grant allows us to provide the most efficient and up-to-date teaching methods to our students in key areas of math and language.”
