14 New Courses This Fall


BRIDGEPORT - Housatonic Community College this fall will be offering 14 new market-driven, non-credit courses.

The courses, offered in areas such as business, art, website design & graphics, Windows applications, and languages, feature rolling start dates, with courses beginning throughout the semester. The fees range from $79 to $399.

“We’ve discovered, in this fast-based society, there’s a great demand for courses that offer people what they need when they need it,” said continuing education coordinator Deborah S. Kuchmas. “With promotions or job changes at stake, people can’t always wait until the start of a traditional semester to start courses.”

The courses include:

  • * Principles of International Business: Covers doing business in the global environment, including the risks involved and coping with global competitors. Offered Wednesdays, Sept.10 through Nov. 12, from 6-7 p.m. in Room B113. Fee: $129.
  • Leadership Character: Explores the relationship between personal character and effective leadership. Meets Thursdays, Sept.18 through Oct. 23, from 6-8 p.m. in Room B224. Fee: $149.
  • Public Speaking: Covers the basics of public speaking, including identifying audience needs, improving persuasiveness, and generating participation. Offered Fridays Sept.12 through Oct. 31, from 7-9 p.m. in Room A234. Fee: $129.
  • Pet Nutrition: Covers the basic food groups and micro-nutrition (vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients) for cats and dogs. It will be offered Saturdays, Sept. 27 through Dec.13, from 10-12 a.m. in Room B224. The fee is $129.
  • Sculpting Marble: Covers using hand tools sculpt marble pieces. Offered Mondays & Wednesdays Sept. 8 through Dec. 8, from 5-8 p.m. in Room B215. Fee: $279.
  • Introduction to Microsoft Office 2007: Provides an overview of new features of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Offered Tuesday Oct.14, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Room B208. Fee: $79.
  • Introduction to Photoshop CS3 (Online): Covers essentials needed to create and edit images. Offered online, Sept.15 through Nov.21. Fee: $99.
  • Introduction to Flash CS3 (Online): Covers creating web pages or web page components that contain text, graphics, and animation. Offered online, Sept.15 through Nov.21. Fee: $99.
  • Introduction to Dreamweaver CS3 (Online): Covers creating and managing web sites, adding graphics and links to pages, and creating rollover images. Offered online, Sept.15 through Nov.21. Fee: $99.
  • Web Design I (Online): Covers website development, including information objects, flow diagrams, templates and layouts, the use of multimedia, the use of hyperlinks, navigational efficiency, text creation, maps, and menus. Offered online, Sept.15 through Nov.21. Fee: $99.
  • Introduction to Illustrator CS3 (Online): Covers creating artwork, and preparing documents to print. Offered online, Sept.15 through Nov.21. Fee: $99.
  • Introduction to Adobe InDesign CS3: Covers arranging elements on a page, formatting type, importing pictures, using layers, saving styles, creating tables, using keyboard shortcuts. Offered Sundays, Sept.14 through Oct. 5, from 12-3 p.m. Fee: $399.
  • Conversational Arabic 2: Continues language and conversational practice covered in Conversational Arabic course. Meets Saturdays, Nov. 1 through Dec 13 (except Nov. 29), Noon to 3 p.m., in Room B107. Fee: $99.
  • Advanced Conversational Spanish: Continues language and conversational practice covered in Conversational Spanish Part II. Meets Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct 27 through Nov. 12, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in Room B107. Fee: $99.
