Housatonic Community College enrollment sets record

Housatonic Community College (HCC) has set a new enrollment record this semester, registering 5,081 students at its newly-expanded downtown campus.

This represents an increase of 14% from the 4,475 students who registered in the fall of 2007, and a 92% increase from the 2,653 who had registered in the fall of 1996, the college’s last semester at its former Barnum Avenue campus on the East Side.

Housatonic’s campus recently was expanded with the completion of Beacon Hall, which includes classrooms, study space, language labs and other facilities.

Beacon Hall has enabled HCC to offer about 200 more courses than in the past.

The new enrollment figures show that part-time students still make up the largest percent of students, comprising 63.06 percent of the student body.

The college still draws the majority of its students from Bridgeport, with 2,288 students — or 45.03 percent of those enrolled — living in the city.
