HCC’S BEACON HALL GRAND OPENING IS SAT, OCT 11

BRIDGEPORT – Free workshops will highlight the Grand Opening of Housatonic Community College’s new Beacon Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In an event that also will feature music, refreshments, guided tours of the new 172,000 square-foot building, and an appearance by the New Haven-based internet radio station Ultra Radio, Housatonic Community College faculty will host workshops that will give visitors a taste of college life.

Those workshops include:

  • 10:30 a.m. -- Choosing and Using Children’s Literature, Prof. Laurie Noe, Room 223.
  • 10:30 a.m. -- Wealth Building 101, Prof. David Brown, Room 362.

Music will be provided by The Essentials, a group headed by HCC Prof. Jack Sopchak of Milford, a former police officer in that town. Sopchak began his higher education at Housatonic and is performing for free as a way of giving back to the college that gave him his start.

The band has other Housatonic connections as well. Vocalist Sharon Juhasz of Stratford, a Bridgeport native, is an HCC student while guitarist Myke Ross of Hamden is a former student.

Housatonic is located at 900 Lafayette Blvd. in downtown Bridgeport, less than 150 yards off I-95 (Exit 27) and Rte. 8 (Exit 1), a block from the Arena at Harbor Yard.
