‘Blue Chip’ Career Program

HCC HOLDING INFO SESSION 12/1 ON OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT PROGRAM

BRUDGEPORT – Housatonic Community College will hold an information session Dec. 10 on the Occupational Therapy Assistant program, one of the college’s “blue chip” career programs.

The session will introduce the audience to the OTA field, and compare and contrast it with other health fields like nursing and physical therapy. The field has been called a “blue chip” career field because of the high starting salaries OTAs make – $45,000 per year on the average – and the fact that the need for OTAs will increase as the 76 million baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964 reach retirement age.

“HCC’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Program is designed to meet the growing need for OTAs, the front-line caregivers in the occupational therapy world,” said OTA Program Coordinator Mickey Reed.

“The program is designed to train competent people who enjoy helping people develop skills for the job of living,” she said. “It’s particularly appealing to people who want to help others but find medical professions like nursing too stressful.”

Reed noted that OTAs and so much in demand that most students are scooped up within three weeks of graduation.

The 90-minute program, which is free and open to the public, begins at 6 p.m. in Room C209 in Lafayette Hall. For more information, contact Mickey Reed at 203-332-5214.

HCC is located at 900 Lafayette Blvd in downtown Bridgeport, less than 150 yards off I-95 (exit 27) and Rte 8 (Exit 1), a block from the arena at Harbor Yard.
