HCC OFFERING THREE MATH CLASSES IN INNOVATIVE OPEN-ENTRY/OPEN EXIT FORMAT

BRIDGEPORTHousatonic Community College next semester is offering three math courses in its innovative Open Entry/Open Exit format.

The courses, Pre-algebra, Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra, are computer-based courses. Students can enter the course any time during the semester, subject to space availability, and take up to three semesters to complete the course.

“The course is ideal for students who have been away from math who want a refresher course,” said Sheila Anderson, Chair of the Developmental Studies Department, “It’s also idea for students who need to spend additional time with mathematics.”

The course approaches math in a step-by-step manner. Tests are given when the student is ready, not when the “class” is ready.

Courses may be completed in les than one semester or in more than one, depending on the student’s progress. In the latter case, registration will be required each semester.

Instructors will facilitate the class, not lecture, and will be available in the classroom to help answer questions. At least one class will be devoted to computer training.
