SPANISH-LANGUAGE PLAY LA GRINGA TO BE STAGED APRIL 1 AT HCC

BRIDGEPORTThe Spanish-language La Gringa, a two-act play by Carmen Rivera, will be staged Wednesday, April 1 at Housatonic Community College.

The play, which will be performed in Spanish with simultaneous translation into English via headsets, tells the story of Maria, the New York-born daughter of Puerto Rican parents, whose journey to her “homeland” becomes a voyage of self discovery. Shunned by family members and a prospective employer for not being Puerto Rican, she nonetheless experiences a spiritual awakening that allows her to realize that Puerto Rico, and being Puerto Rican, has always been and will always be part of who she is.

The play will be performed by the New York-based Repertorio Espanol, which was founded in1968 to introduce the best of Latin-American, Spanish and Hispanic-American theatre in distinctive, quality productions, and to bring theatre to a broad audience in New York City and across the country.

Playwright Carmen Rivera is a New Yorker of Puerto Rican heritage. She holds an MA in playwriting and Latin American theatre from New York University. Her plays have been produced at many New York City theatres.

The performance will be in HCC’s Performing Arts Center, Lafayette Hall on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 7 p.m.  It is free and open to the public.
