HCC Offers Medical Coder Certification

Fast-Track Program, Classes Start June 9

BRIDGEPORT – Housatonic Community College next month will offer a fast-track program leading to medical-professional coder certification (CPC).

The five part program will meet Tuesdays (8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a half hour lunch break) and Fridays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (with no break), June 9-Aug.21. It will include the following segments:

  • Part1, ICD-9 - This course will emphasize the basic transformation of verbal descriptions of diseases, symptoms, and injuries, respiratory, digestive, genitourinary, musculoskeletal integumentary systems, pregnancy, childbirth, poisoning, E codes, late effects, and V codes into numeric designations.
  • Part 2, CPT and Modifiers – This course covers the coding methodology and guidelines needed to assign correct evaluation and management, anesthesia, surgical medicine, radiology, and pathology codes. It also covers the application of modifiers to various CPT codes to increase revenue or report statistical data.
  • Part 3, HCPC – This course covers applying codes fort DME (Durable Medical Equipment) and drugs used in physician office.
  • Part 4, Billing and Reimbursement – This course covers following  the appropriate guidelines to increase revenue and ensure compliance,  translating written documentation into numerical language, and identifying and coding services on a CMS – 15 claim form.
  • Part 5, CMRS exam - Students who satisfactorily complete the medical coding courses will be eligible to take the Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) exam. All students must pay the $100.00 application fee, as well as the examination fee which has yet to be determined. The instructor will announce the  fee, which is estimated to be in the $250-$300 range.

The fee for the five-part program is $1,034. Course prerequisites include Medical Terminology and Orientation to Human Anatomy and Biology.

Housatonic Community College is located at 900 Lafayette Blvd. in downtown Bridgeport, less than 150 yards off I-95 (Exit 27) and Rte.8 (Exit 1), a block from the Arena at Harbor Yard.
