Fairfield County Community Foundation Grant to Housatonic Community College
Funds will Support Minority Male Students

Paul Antinozzi, President of the Housatonic Community College Foundation, Inc., has announced that the Fairfield County Community Foundation has given a competitive grant of $15,000 to support the HCC You Can Do It (YCDI) initiative, a program dedicated to helping minority male students achieve academic success.

The grant will provide the students in the program with tuition and textbook assistance. Fifteen students participated in the 2009 pilot program and 25 students will be added in the summer of 2010.

The program, now ongoing through the academic year, is designed to help minority male students master the skills necessary for academic success. Antinozzi says, “Historically and nation-wide, minority males have exhibited a low rate of college completion and academic success. YCDI has been created to help improve this statistic by providing at-risk students with an environment where they feel welcomed, understood, motivated and supported to become successful students and contributing citizens of the Greater Bridgeport area. This grant will help YCDI students attend college full-time and achieve success.

YCDI students are helped to envision positive futures by establishing and pursuing career goals, and ensuring their academic progress while developing leadership skills through service to HCC and the community. Students receive individual mentoring and tutoring as well as weekly study sessions, tuition and textbook assistance, and a dedicated Men’s Center.

Yolanda Caldera-Durant, Fairfield County Community Foundation Program Director says, “We are pleased that this grant gives Housatonic Community College support for You Can Do It. Assisting members of our community to become successful, productive members of the community is very important and is consistent with the goals of our Foundation. We look forward to the positive results of this initiative that will impact the region.”
