HCC Offers Medical Coder Certification Program
Fast-Track Program

BRIDGEPORT – Housatonic Community College next month will offer a fast-track program leading to medical-professional coder certification (CPC).
The program, which runs from Feb. 9 to May 14, requires a working knowledge of anatomy and biology and related terminology. It consists of the following courses:

  • Medical Coding ICD-9 and HCPC: Medical coders are in demand in medical offices, hospitals and health-related facilities. Coded data is essential for insurance reimbursement and other information management. The course covers transforming verbal descriptions of diseases, injuries, and procedures into numeric or alphanumeric designations. The course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 9- March 11, 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., in Room 319 in Beacon Hall. The instructor for the course, which costs $352 excluding texts, is Dee DiMauro.       
  • Medical Coding CPT: This course covers the methodology and guidelines of coding. It also covers the application of modifiers to various CPT codes to increase revenue or report statistical data. Medical Coding ICD-9 and HCPC is a course prerequisite. The course, which costs $352 excluding texts, meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 16-April 15, 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., in Room 319 in Beacon Hall.
  • Medical Insurance and Reimbursement: The course covers increasing revenue and applying compliance by guidelines, translating written documentation into numerical language, and identifying and coding services on a CMS – 15 claim form. Major health insurance programs and government-sponsored programs will be discussed with an emphasis on Federal and State plans: Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial carriers. Students will become familiar with insurance terminology. Students who satisfactorily complete the Medical Coding course will be eligible to take the Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) exam. Students must score a passing rate of 86 percent or better. All students must pay approximately $100.00 for membership to be eligible to take the official CMRS exam. The exam fee, to be paid by check or money order, is approximately $300. The course prerequisites are Medical Coding ICD-9 and HCPC, and Medical Coding CPT. The course, which costs $424 excluding texts, meets Saturdays, April 10 to May 8, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., in a room to be determined. The instructor is Linda Dixon.
  • CPC Exam Review & Exam: This multifaceted course consists of several parts. In Part I, students will use the advanced coding knowledge they have acquired to code operative reports, emergency department reports, discharge summaries, clinic and office-chart notes, radiology reports, and CT Scan reports. Students will practice reading doctor’s notes and applying the appropriate code. Part 2 entails a comprehensive review of medical terminology, abbreviations, anatomy, coding and guidelines. This part also involves taking mock CPC exams to improve understanding of guidelines and timing in preparation for the actual exam. Part 3 is the CPC Exam. Students who satisfactorily complete the Medical Coding course will be eligible to take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam. This exam is required for students to become a Certified Professional Coder. Students must score a passing rate of 71 percent or better. The exam fee, to be paid by check or money order, is in the $264 - $325 range. The instructor will announce the exact exam fee. The course, which costs $470, meets Fridays, April 9 – May 14, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., in a room to be determined. The instructor is Linda Dixon.
