HCC Enrolls 5,903 Students
Sets New Record
Up 125 percent in 14 years

BRIDGEPORT – Housatonic Community College this semester has set a new enrollment record, registering 5,903 students at its newly expanded downtown Bridgeport campus.

The number represents an increase of some 14.6 percent over the 5,152 students who registered in the Spring of 2009, and a 125 percent increase over the 2,653 who registered in the Fall of 1996, the college’s last semester at its old Barnum Avenue campus in the city’s east end.

“We continue to see the impact of the economic downturn on our enrollment,” said Registrar James Connolly. “More and more people are looking at community colleges as employees are outsourced or downsized and as families tighten their financial belts. Many realize that they can cut their tuition bill in half by going to a community college for two years and then transferring to a four-year school.”

This semester’s full-time enrollment reached the 2,131 mark, up 21.6 percent over last Spring’s 1,753. Part-time enrollment hit the 3,772 mark, up 11 percent from last Spring’s 3,399.

Full-time equivalent enrollment at the college has reached the 3,380 mark, up 17.3 percent over last Spring’s 2,882.

The new results show that women still outnumber men at the campus. Some 62.6 percent (3,695) of the enrollees are women.

HCC continues to attract a diverse student body. Some 58.2 reported their ethnicity as either Black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian/Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, multiple race or other non-Caucasian.  Of these, Black students comprised 28.1 percent (1,659); Hispanics, 23.9 percent (1,411); Asians, 3.0 percent (175);  American Indian/Alaskan Natives, 0.2 percent (13); other race, 2.4 percent (143), and multiple races, 0.5 percent (29).

The college still draws the majority of its students from Bridgeport (2,816 students, 47.7  percent) and Stratford (775 students, 13.1 percent); followed by Shelton (372 students, 6.3 percent);  Milford (353 students, 6.0 percent);  Trumbull (304 students, 5.1 percent); Fairfield (261 students, 4.4 percent); Ansonia (145 students, 2.5 percent); Monroe (138 students, 2.3 percent); Derby (80 students, 1.4 percent); Seymour (59 students, 1  percent); and Easton (25 students, 0.4 percent).

Housatonic is located less than 150 yards off I-95 (Exit 27) and Rte. 8 (Exit 1) in downtown Bridgeport, a block from the Arena at Harbor Yard.
