PERSONAL TRAINER PROGRAM STARTS FEB. 13 AT HCC

LEADS TO NATIONAL CERTIFICATION EXAM

TUITION: $524

BRIDGEPORT - Thinking of a career as a personal trainer?

Think Housatonic.

Housatonic Community College is offering an intensive, six-week non-credit program that will prepare students for the Personal Trainer National Certification exam. Personal trainers work with one, two or three clients, usually in a gym or in homes. They help clients assess their level of physical fitness and set and reach fitness goals. They also demonstrate various exercises and help clients improve their exercise techniques.

"On the average, personal training is an occupation that is expected to grow faster than all other occupations," said Director of Workforce and Non-Credit Programs Deborah S. Kuchmas. "With 261,000 fitness trainers employed nationally, the number is expected to increase 29 percent to 337,900 by 2018," she said.

Driving the growth, Kuchmas said, are aging baby boomers concerned with staying healthy and physically fit. Also feeding the demand are parents concerned about childhood obesity at a time when the number of physical education programs in schools is being reduced.

Added to the demand are jobs created by people leaving these occupations each year to retire or pursue other career options.

The median annual wages of fitness and aerobics instructors in May, 2008 was $29,210, with the top ten percent making $60,000 or more, she added.

This 60-hour program, which covers subjects such as biomechanics, exercise physiology, fitness testing, equipment usage and health assessment, consists of 15 hours of lecture, 15 hours of practical training, and 30 hours of internship.

The course begins Feb. 13and runs through March 27. The classes will be held 11:45 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. in Room B113 in Lafayette Hall. The fee is $524. The national certification exam xam will be scheduled during the final week of class.
