BRIDGEPORT – Some 539 students, members of the 2nd largest class in Housatonic Community College history, were awarded associate degrees and certificates Thursday night (5/31) at the college’s 45th commencement.

The graduates, clad in the dark blue Housatonic caps and gowns, gathered at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard to be honored for their achievements by a panel of dignitaries that included Dr. Robert A. Kennedy, President, Board of Regents for Higher Education; Nicholas Donofrio, member of the Board of Regents; and HCC President Anita T. Gliniecki. The class of 2011, with its 555 degrees and certificates, remains the college’s largest class while the Class of 2009, with its 449 degrees and certificates, drops to third.

Two students were honored with the President’s Medallion for Academic Excellence for maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout their academic career at HCC. Those students were Bridgeport resident Natasha Jones and Stratford resident Jacqueline Montalvo.

Forty students were eligible to ascend the podium multiple times to receive multiple degrees and/or certificates. Receiving two degrees were Ayanna Lopez of Ansonia, Kariam Castro, Teodora Costello Guevara, and Sindreatha Terry of Bridgeport; Renee Llanos of Derby; Robert Willis of Fairfield; Bethani Hart of Milford, Victoria Jackson of Shelton; and Stephen Ensinger of Trumbull. Receiving a degree and two certificates were Gamalier Feliciano of Stamford and Tiffany Phaneuf of Bridgeport.

Receiving a degree and a certificate were Jenna Koch of Ansonia; Clarens Clement, Carolina DeLeon, Joseph Diaz, Abigail Escarate, Maribel Galindo, RoseElla Jean Baptiste, Stavros Kourpouanidis, Lysandra Pamias, Kathleen Ramirez, Edward Rivera, Debra Robison, Maria Rodriguez, Monica Tapia, Daniel Viera, and Erica Villanueva of Bridgeport; Lydia Altamirano of Derby; Jessica Lopez of Shelton; Melissa DeSilva of Stamford; Shaquanta Campbell, Luisa Garcia, Andre Geyer; Katarzyna Grubka, Kaitlyn Heffernan, Elizabeth Lawal, Ayaceli Martinez, Jacqueline Moffatt, and Bianca Samson of Stratford; and Jonathan Roy of West Haven.

One unique feature of commencement was the graduation of a mother-daughter combination. Stratford’s Sharon Poplaski graduated with her daughter Alyssa, after a college career that saw them sitting in the same classroom.
In his keynote speech, Kennedy told the group that their education thus far can serve them well. “The skills you learned in college – thinking critically, assessing different outcomes and problem-solving – will help you on your road toward your future,” he said. “You’ve acquired a wonderful education that will prepare you for your next steps, whatever those may be.”

HCC President Anita T. Gliniecki told the graduates she is proud of their achievements, “You have worked hard,” she said. “You have met the challenges. You have grasped the opportunities, and proved that you are ready for the next step after graduation, whether to continue your education or enter directly into the workforce.”

“We are confident that you are prepared and have what it takes to succeed,” she said..
