Mark Newton, Bridgeport, has been award the $3,000 Matthew Semple Memorial Scholarship enabling him to enter the HCC Advanced Manufacturing program this fall. Newton’s HCC tuition, besides the Semple Scholarship, is also assisted by the WorkPlace and Financial Aid.

The award, named for the son of Connecticut Commissioner of Corrections Scott Semple, is awarded to a formerly incarcerated person who has been released within the past 12 months and who resides in Fairfield County. Additionally, the candidate must be able to demonstrate good moral and ethical character and intends to pursue a training program that leads to a nationally recognized credential or enrolls into an institution of higher education.

Newton is a veteran and plans to earn a Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing: Machine Technology, the HCC 9-month program. Recent graduates have achieved 100% employment.

Newton will receive The Matthew Semple Memorial Scholarship on Thursday, July 28 at 2 p.m. in the Manufacturing Center, Lafayette Hall at HCC.
